What is ShoreSafe?
ShoreSafe is an AI-powered coastal erosion prediction web application built for Louisiana. Using a machine-learning model trained on historical shoreline data and environmental variables, ShoreSafe predicts future erosion risk for any location along the Louisiana coast. Click a spot on the map or enter a ZIP code and it instantly returns a localized risk assessment, a probability estimate, and a projected timeline of land loss.
The model is 60% more accurate than traditional historical-average forecasting methods. It captures nearly 100% of observed erosion within the top 10% of highest-risk coastline, meaning it can reliably identify the most vulnerable areas first. ShoreSafe was built to translate that scientific precision into something anyone can understand and use.

Why I Built It
Louisiana has the highest rate of coastal land loss in the United States, but most of the data documenting it is buried in technical reports that are hard for regular people to find, understand, or act on. Existing maps document past erosion. ShoreSafe predicts what comes next.
I built ShoreSafe because I wanted to make the science accessible. The machine-learning model draws on decades of USGS and NOAA shoreline data and is deployed as an interactive web map. The goal was to connect scientific modeling with real-world resilience planning, and to put that tool directly in the hands of the communities it affects.
